MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has had a three-game ban lifted by the Football Association following his red card against Tottenham on Sunday.

United announced on Tuesday that they had successfully appealed against wrongful dismissal from the governing body after Fernandes was sent off for a dangerous tackle on James Maddison.

Fernandes was due to be suspended for the Premier League games against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham.

The Portugal international was shown a red card in the 42nd minute against Spurs, after which United lost 3-0.

“Nobody wants to be sent off, that’s not a good feeling,” Fernandes said on Sunday. “I didn’t choose the cleats. It’s never a red card. Even James Maddison said when he got up that it wasn’t a red card.”

Fernandes appeared to slip as he attempted a tackle in the Tottenham half – but then he lifted his foot and caught Maddison on the shin in a stud-up challenge.

Referee Christopher Kavanagh immediately showed the red card.
