Here is a recent soccer story from AP:

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Not good enough. That was Arne Slot’s verdict after his first defeat as Liverpool manager on Saturday.

A surprise 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League ended Slot’s perfect record since replacing Jürgen Klopp at Anfield at the end of last season.

“We had a lot of possession but we could only create three (or) four fairly good chances. So that’s not nearly enough when you have that much possession,” said the Dutchman, who said his team should not lose against teams like Forest.

“Losing a home game is always a setback, especially when you play against a team we never know. Maybe they fight until the end for Champions League tickets, but normally that team doesn’t finish in the top 10, so losing a game against them is a big disappointment.”

Slot won his first three games as manager, including a memorable 3-0 victory over Manchester United before the international break.

But that streak ended when Callum Hudson-Odoi struck in the 72nd minute with a curling shot from the edge of the box that went past goalkeeper Alisson.

Following Liverpool’s defeat, Manchester City are the only team with a 100 percent record in the league after a 2-1 win against Brentford.

Man United won 3-0 at Southampton, ending their two-game losing streak.

Seven minutes after coming on as a substitute, Christopher Nkunku scored to secure Chelsea’s 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

Unstoppable Haaland

Erling Haaland now reaches 99 goals for City after scoring twice against Brentford.

The Norwegian scored his brace after Yoane Wissa had put Brentford ahead 22 seconds from time.

Haaland scored his 98th and 99th goals in his 103rd City appearance in all competitions and just needed the post to complete his third consecutive hat-trick after three goals against Ipswich and West Ham.

“He’s been really, really good. Yes, I’d say he’s the best (he’s ever been), but it’s only been four games (this season),” said City manager Pep Guardiola.

Haaland, who is nominated for the Ballon d’Or, has scored nine goals in four league games and has topped the league’s goalscoring charts in each of his two seasons at City since joining from Borussia Dortmund for $63 million in 2022.

Haaland’s first goal after 19 minutes levelled the game after Wissa’s opener stunned the Etihad Stadium crowd. Haaland turned and shot past goalkeeper Mark Flekken after a slight deflection off Ethan Pinnock.

In the 32nd minute he was too strong for Pinnock as he shook off the defender and ran through for his second goal.

In the 81st minute, he was just inches from the goal; the shot, after beating the goalkeeper, rebounded off the post.

Rashford ends run

Marcus Rashford ended a 12-game drought in front of goal as United beat Southampton.

Rashford doubled United’s lead at Saint Mary’s after Matthijs de Ligt scored his first goal for the club, with substitute Alejandro Garnacho adding a third in the sixth minute of added time.

The win came after United suffered two consecutive defeats.

Rashford had not scored since United’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool in March, but he fired home from the edge of the box in the 41st minute to give Erik ten Hag’s side a 2-0 lead in Southampton.

Ten Hag said it could be a turning point for the striker.

“Every striker wants to be on the scoresheet. Once the first goal is scored, more will follow. Like a ketchup bottle: once it starts running, more will follow,” he said.

De Ligt, who joined United from Bayern Munich in the off-season, headed in a Bruno Fernandes cross in the 35th minute.

Things could have turned out differently if Cameron Archer had converted a penalty for Southampton in the 33rd minute, but his attempt was saved by goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Newly promoted Southampton were reduced to ten men when Jack Stephens was sent off in the 79th minute for a foul on Garnacho.

Chelsea horror

Chelsea were lucky in their misfortune before Nkunku’s 86th-minute goal, with Bournemouth hitting the woodwork twice and Robert Sanchez saving a penalty in the first half.

Marcus Tavernier hit the crossbar in the fourth minute and Evanilson failed to score from the penalty spot in the 38th minute.

In the second half, another attempt by Ryan Christie hit the post.

Nkunku came on in the 79th minute and didn’t need long to score the winning goal, with the assist coming from fellow substitute Jadon Sancho.

Villa comeback

After three consecutive defeats at the start of the league, Everton seemed close to their first win when they led 2-0 against Aston Villa.

Goals from Dwight McNeil and Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw Sean Dyche’s team take control until Ollie Watkins equalised with two goals.

Jhon Duran completed Villa’s comeback and secured a 3-2 win in the 76th minute, leaving Everton bottom of the table and the only top team without a point.

Late drama

Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a penalty in injury time to rescue Crystal Palace’s 2-2 draw with Leicester.

Leicester led 2-0 at Selhurst Park after goals from Jamie Vardy and Stephy Mavididi.

But Mateta sparked Palace’s response with a goal in the 47th minute, a minute after Mavididi had doubled Leicester’s lead.

Conor Coady fouled Ismaili Sarr in the penalty area shortly before the end and Mateta stayed cool enough to convert.

West Ham even managed to save a point in the closing stages of the match in a 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Danny Ings scored in the fifth minute of added time after Raul Jimenez’s goal looked set to give Fulham the win.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, August’s Manager of the Month, was frustrated after his side drew 0-0 at home to Ipswich.
