According to National Geographic, Burmese pythons are among the largest known snakes in the world and can reach a length of up to seven meters.
This man probably had no idea about this, because he was shocked at how big his illegally acquired python had become in such a short time.
CBS Local New York reports that a huge specimen of this species – over four meters long and weighing around 36 kilograms – was recovered from a house in New York, a state where keeping such reptiles as pets is not allowed without a permit.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation – the organization that rescued the snake – said the unnamed man to whom the python admitted its pet was not prepared for how big the snake would become and how quickly it would grow.
He gave the snake away and admitted that he could no longer care for it. The authorities issued him a ticket for keeping wild animals as pets and possessing dangerous wild animals without a permit.
“Oh, poor baby, are they taking him to a shelter?” wonders user X on ABC7’s Eyewitness News page. “It’s not his fault he’s such a big lump.”
“That’s just how people do it…” commented another, this time on the ABC News article.
The snake was donated to the Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo in Rome, NY
