Man wanted for murder arrested after standoff at Chicago restaurant near DNC, authorities say

CHICAGO (AP) — A man who escaped from a Mississippi courthouse and is wanted on murder and armed robbery charges was taken into custody Wednesday after a standoff with police at a Chicago restaurant blocks from the Democratic National Convention, authorities said.

Joshua Zimmerman was taken into custody Wednesday morning, said Abigail Meyer, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals Service.

Zimmerman had been wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service since his escape in June and was located at the Chicago restaurant on Tuesday, according to Justin Smith, chief deputy of the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Zimmerman fled the district court in Hernando, Mississippi, where he was being held on attempted murder and armed robbery charges. He is also awaiting extradition to Houston, Texas, where he faces murder charges, the Marshals Service said.

Chicago police said (without naming Zimmerman) that one person was arrested around 7:20 a.m. and that the SWAT operation, which began around 4 p.m. Tuesday, had ended.

It wasn’t immediately clear how authorities tracked Zimmerman to Chicago, and there was no evidence of a connection to the Democratic National Convention. But the restaurant where he is believed to be hiding is about a half-mile from Chicago’s United Center, where the convention is being held.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Smith said Zimmerman was “barricaded in the restaurant” and that authorities wanted to return him to Mississippi and “gather the remaining facts about his escape.”

The story has been updated to correct the first name of the man being sought from Justin to Joshua.
