Manchester United endured a thoroughly miserable first half against Tottenham in their Premier League duel at Old Trafford.

Brennan Johnson gave Tottenham the lead within two minutes after wonderful work from Micky van de Ven.

United limped through a miserable first-half performance in which Tottenham should have extended their lead as Andre Onana denied Timo Werner the best chances of the period.

A dismal first 45 also resulted in Bruno Fernandes receiving a red card for his foul on James Maddison.

The home team were booed as the half-time whistle sounded by an angry Old Trafford crowd. Dejan Kulusevski extended the lead at the start of the second half.

At half-time, United needed some drastic inspiration. Will they get it? Follow our live blog for the latest results and updates.

Another minute, another chance for Spurs. Kulusevski pushes through the middle and pushes a nice ball through for Werner. It’s a carbon copy of the first half performance and the end result is the same: a weak attempt from the German and a decent stop from Onana.

54 mins

That’s another yellow card for United. Lisandro Martinez bursts through Maddison this time and three of the home team’s back four receive a yellow card. This could get even more chaotic.

Spurs casually prevailed again, with Porro the last to make the breakthrough. However, he doesn’t quite manage to block the shot and Onana easily parries it.

49 mins

After three minutes, Spurs strike again! United are caught way too high up the pitch and Spurs break through them again. Johnson is the creator this time and finds Kulusevski, who finishes cleverly and doubles the lead.

Mason Mount comes on for Mainoo – but he left the field before the substitution and United are temporarily down to nine players. United can’t even get a replacement at the moment.

41 mins

United are down to 10 players as Bruno received a red card for his foul on Maddison. The skipper slipped as he tried to turn but his outstretched boot was high and hit the Spurs star high on the shin.

RED CARD FOR BRUNO FERNANDES

38 mins

For the Spurs it should be two. Werner strolls through the duel and races past de Ligt. Onana is outside and parries, but it’s a very weak attempt from the German.

36th minute: Garnacho hits the post!

Close to the Argentine! Rashford’s cross lands at the near post to Garnacho, who shoots the ball towards goal for the first time. It bounces off the goal frame, much to Vicario’s relief.

32 mins

What a performance from Romero! The tall central defender shoots a half-volley, but his shot goes just wide of the post.

29 mins

This time Dalot carelessly gives the ball away on the edge of his own penalty area. Maddison lets the shot fly, but Maddison easily parries it.

This is absolutely miserable from United.

26 mins

Another stroke of luck for United. Spurs break through again and Johnson hits the ball over the goal where Werner is waiting. Mazraoui reacts brilliantly and knocks the ball away.

25 mins

Ugarte wins the ball high up the pitch but Zirkzee isn’t sharp enough to capitalize as his poor pass is quickly intercepted.

22 mins

Chance for United! Mainoo pushes a clever pass to Zirkzee, who has found space in the five-yard area. Vicario goes down to keep it out.

19th minute: Tottenham hits the post!

Tottenham fails by post! Werner and Udogie make Mazraoui and Garnacho a real eye-catcher on the left, while United’s press is everywhere.

The ball comes to Johnson from the right, but his shot across the goal goes past the post.
