Man stabbed in stomach in latest violence near Randall’s Island migrant center

Police say a man was stabbed in the stomach outside the Randall’s Island migrant shelter on Sunday morning, the latest in a series of violent incidents in or near the facility that prompted police to launch a major search for contraband earlier this month.

The attack occurred at about 10:30 a.m. and resulted in a 26-year-old man being admitted to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, NYPD officials said. They said he was in stable condition Monday.

Just over a week ago, NYPD officers raided the homeless shelter, which has 3,000 residents, to search for contraband. But they found nothing and made no arrests, according to a police spokesman.

The operation followed a three-person shooting near the shelter that killed 44-year-old local resident Sandra Martinez and injured two others as people gathered to celebrate the preliminary results of Venezuela’s elections on June 29.

Violent attacks are nothing new in the sprawling tent complex that houses both men and women.

In January, 24-year-old Dafren Canizalez was stabbed and killed at the home, and police arrested another resident in connection with the incident.

Two weeks later, another man was stabbed and injured in a fight. Police arrested 18 people at the scene. Six of them were eventually charged with various offenses, including illegal possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment.

Violence has occurred in or near other shelters across the city — including recently near the Hall Street facility in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, where three men were shot in two separate incidents on the same night in July. Police say those two incidents, although only minutes apart, appear to be unrelated. They have arrested and charged a man for shooting two people outside the facility and a park worker for shooting a man in a nearby park at the corner of Flushing Avenue and Steuben Street.

Migrants living in or near the shelters told Gothamist they are very afraid for their safety.

Police said they had made no immediate arrests in connection with Sunday’s stabbing at the Randall’s Island homeless shelter.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
