Man sleeping in truck arrested with 500 fentanyl pills and loaded gun: police

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA – Two people from Alaska were arrested Sunday night in the unincorporated community of Petaluma with 500 suspected fentanyl pills, a loaded gun and other drugs, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s spokesman Rob Dillion said a deputy was responding to an alarm call in Petaluma when he noticed a pickup truck with a trailer parked across the street with its hazard lights on.

“The driver was hunched over the steering wheel and not moving,” Dillion said. “The deputy was concerned that the driver was injured or unconscious, so he stopped the vehicle and walked to the truck.”

As the deputy attempted to wake the driver, he saw him reaching for something near the center console. To ensure the safety of everyone involved, deputies removed both the driver and passenger from the truck. When the driver exited, the deputy noticed a small bag containing a white crystalline substance between the driver’s feet, Dillion said.

It is alleged that during his search of the immediate area of the driver’s seat, the officer found a loaded .45 caliber handgun, additional ammunition, a loaded magazine, a large fixed blade knife, 500 suspected fentanyl pills, several baggies of suspected fentanyl powder, and a baggie of suspected methamphetamine, totaling 244.5 grams of suspected fentanyl and 92.8 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

The driver, identified as Kayne Enyeart, 61, of Alaska, was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Jail on eight counts of crime:

• Serious criminal in possession of a weapon
• Carrying a loaded weapon in a vehicle
• Serious criminals in possession of ammunition
• Possession of narcotics for sale
• Transport of narcotics for sale
• Possession of illegal drugs and a loaded weapon
• Possession of a controlled substance for sale
• Transportation of a controlled substance.

Prison records show that Enyeart was no longer in custody as of Thursday.

The passenger, Deanna Welsh, 52, of Alaska, was cited and released on suspicion of four charges:

• Possession of narcotics for sale
• Transport of narcotics for sale
• Possession of methamphetamine for sale
• Transportation of methamphetamine for sale

“We are proud of the work our officers do on patrol and are excited to have our drug enforcement unit begin operations this month,” Dillion said.
