Man rams patrol car, hits tree and dies, Columbus police say

A man died in an accident on Wednesday while trying to flee from police.

Police are attempting to arrest a man wanted for aggravated assault in connection with a stabbing, said Sergeant Joe Alber of the press office.

The man was spotted in the area of East 23rd Avenue and Gladstone Avenue around 6:20 p.m. Officers activated their blue lights and sirens near Cleveland Avenue and East 24th Avenue.

Albert said the man put the car in reverse and collided with a patrol car carrying two police officers.

The man fled, but within minutes he lost control and crashed into a tree in an alley near Medina Avenue and East 22nd Avenue.

Albert said the man, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital and died around 7:06 p.m.

The two officers in the patrol car that was hit were not injured.

The suspect reportedly drove at high speed through alleys and front gardens.

“There are children out here playing. It’s a very dangerous situation. We as a police department weigh the importance of arresting this individual against the circumstances of him driving at a high rate of speed. But I want you to keep in mind that this individual was wanted for a stabbing,” the sergeant said.

Due to the death, Columbus Police asked the Ohio State Highway Patrol to investigate the case out of an abundance of caution.

Albert said no stop tactics or violence were used.
