A man allegedly robbed a teenager near a Zion elementary school while holding a gun to his head and ordering him to take off his clothes before stealing his belongings, prosecutors said.
Darrion K. Gibson, 20, of Zion was charged with armed robbery with a firearm (a Class X felony) and aggravated robbery (a Class 1 felony).
Zion Police responded to a report of a delayed armed robbery at approximately 9:30 p.m. on May 15.
According to Lake County Assistant District Attorney Michael Theis, officers found a juvenile with his girlfriend on the basketball court at Elmwood Elementary School.
The boy accompanied her home on Ezra Avenue shortly before 9 p.m.
As he was near Ezra Avenue and 31st Street, two people, one later identified as Gibson, approached him on foot after crossing the street, Theis said.
Theis said Gibson, dressed all in black and wearing a face mask, pointed a handgun with an activated laser sight and flashlight directly at the victim’s face.
Gibson demanded the boy’s belongings and ordered him to remove his clothes, Theis said.
Theis said Gibson stole an Apple iPhone, a black and white college jacket, an Apple AirPods case and an Adidas backpack.
At some point during the robbery, Gibson pulled down his face mask and the victim recognized him as a former friend, Theis said.
Theis said Gibson and the second person accompanying him, a minor, both fled eastbound from Elmwood Elementary School.
The victim went to a friend’s house and the friend’s mother called 911 to report the armed robbery.
The robbery was captured on recovered video surveillance and a photo comparison was conducted, which led to the victim clearly identifying Gibson as the prime suspect.
Theis said Gibson committed the robbery because the victim had previously threatened to kill him.
Theis called Gibson a dangerous person and said the man tracked down the victim and carried out the armed robbery outside an elementary school in a residential area.
A public defender for Gibson said his client denies the allegations and maintains his innocence.
According to court records, Gibson has two other cases pending in Lake County involving charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen vehicle and aggravated escape.
Gibson has been held in the Lake County Jail since June 1 after his pretrial release was revoked in one of those cases.
On July 24, a detention hearing was held in his new armed robbery case, and a judge ordered him held in custody pending trial on those charges.
