Madden Williams shines in St. John Bosco’s win over Sierra Canyon

CHATSWORTH, CALIFORNIA – It was the Madden Williams show.

The junior wide receiver delivered a terrific performance to secure St. John Bosco’s 38-28 away win at Sierra Canyon on Saturday night.

“That was one of the best performances by a wide receiver I’ve ever seen,” said St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro.

Williams caught the ball first for a 96-yard touchdown. His second play came in the third quarter, a 16-yard jump ball into the back corner of the end zone. The score gave St. John Bosco a 24-14 lead late in the third quarter.

“In (Madden), I think the 50-50 jump balls are more like 70-30,” Negro said.

Williams’ best play came last. He raced up the middle, caught a pass from freshman QB Koa Malau’ulu, who was replacing injured starter Matai Fuiava, then slipped a defender and rolled in for a touchdown that seemed like a stab in the back with less than six minutes left. The score gave St. John Bosco a 31-21 lead.

Williams finished the game with 10 catches for 252 yards and three touchdowns against a talented Sierra Canyon secondary whose top players were Madden Riordan (USC freshman) and Jae’yon Young (Cal freshman), who returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown earlier in the game.

“This is crazy,” Williams said, laughing when he heard his stats. “I was really just trying to do my job and win.”

Williams had a negative play on Saturday night when he dropped the ball after a catch in the second half.

“I have to mention his fumble. I’m taking points off him for that,” Negro said jokingly.

Williams is a 4-star recruit with offers from Arizona, Auburn, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon and Penn State.

St. John Bosco improved to 3-0 and Sierra Canyon fell to 2-2, a preview of what could happen in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Sierra Canyon had the ball in St. John Bosco territory and trailed just 24-21. With ten minutes left, it had a chance to take the lead, but the St. John Bosco defense held firm and was able to get the ball back to the offense. On the ensuing possession, Fuiava was hit hard, putting him out of action for the rest of the game.

Koa Malau’ulu stepped in and orchestrated an impressive drive in the heart of the fourth quarter, which was crowned with Williams’ final touchdown catch.

“He has shown a lot of maturity,” Negro said of the rookie.

Fuiava threw 17 of 29 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Malau’ulu threw 4 of 9 passes for 38 yards and the solo touchdown pass to Williams.

“We’ve been working on it in training,” Williams said of his rhythm with Malau’ulu, “in case Matai ever goes down, and he’s improved.”

Sierra Canyon’s Wyatt Becker completed 12 of 24 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. Running back Jaxsen Stokes rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on eight rushing attempts. The Trailblazers were without 2022 Mission League MVP Dane Dunn, who will miss 2-4 weeks with an elbow injury.
