Lydia Ko wins gold in the women’s Olympic golf tournament and qualifies for the LPGA Hall of Fame

Lydia Ko finally gets her gold medal.

After winning silver at the 2016 Rio Games and bronze at the Tokyo Games, she now has a full Olympic medal collection at just 27 years old.

The New Zealander started the round on a score of 9 under par, level with Morgane Metraux. Metraux struggled at Le Golf National on Saturday, reaching 7 over par in the final round, meaning she finished the tournament on 2 under par without a medal.

Ko shot 71, 1 under par to win the gold medal. With the gold medal, Ko has accomplished enough to qualify for induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame.

One can qualify for induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame by earning points through milestones in one’s career. Ko is a 20-time LPGA tournament winner, two-time major winner, two-time Rolex LPGA Player of the Year winner and now a three-time Olympic medalist.

With this gold medal, Ko now has enough points to become the 35th person inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame.

German Ester Henseleit stormed into second place with a 6-under-par 66 in the final round, putting her at 8 under par for the tournament. Ko had a one-shot lead over Henseleit on the 18th hole, and a bogey would have put the two in a playoff.

Ko played the par-5 18th hole safely, not wanting to take any chances. She placed her second shot just short of the water, not wanting to be too aggressive, and hit the ball into the water. She hit the green on her third shot and holed the birdie putt to win gold.

China’s Xiyu Lin won bronze with 7 under par.
