LSU Football and Brian Kelly should take advice from Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key

The highlight of the opening weekend was clearly the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ victory over the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles. The game was a spectacular start to the college football season and Georgia Tech had a clear plan of attack. Florida State was considered to have one of the best defenses in the nation, which was destroyed by Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets ran the football 36 times while passing the ball just 11 times. On the ground, Georgia Tech gained 190 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per run, and scored three touchdowns. After the game, head coach Brent Key shared his clear plan of attack for the opening game.

That message should resonate with Brian Kelly, Joe Sloan and the LSU football team ahead of the season opener.

Georgia Tech has a great offensive line, but LSU has by far a better group up front and possibly the best offensive line in the country. Jamal Haynes is a solid running back, but we all expect Kaleb Jackson to be one of the best running backs in the country this season. Last season, Kaleb Jackson averaged 5.3 yards per carry, Josh Williams averaged 5.2, and John Emery Jr. also averaged 5.3 yards per carry.

The Tigers aren’t exactly going up against a group as talented as Florida State’s defensive front, either. This is a USC football team that got shredded by its opponents in both the passing and running attacks in 2023. The Trojans allowed 186.5 rushing yards per game in 2023, which ranked 117th nationally.

While the Trojans are bringing in a new defensive line and some transfers that they hope will change the dynamic of the defense, the message should remain the same. USC will be better up front, but they still lack talented depth on the defensive line. The strength of this offensive line is in the run game, where they have five maulers before you factor in the impact of the tight ends in the run game. Relying on this USC defensive line early in this game will prove to be effective in the fourth quarter.

As the LSU football team begins the season, we trust Garrett Nussmeier, but he may need some time to fully adjust to playing for the team. When you have a clear strength, you use it, and the Tigers have one with their offensive line. A strong running attack will also open up LSU’s passing attack, where Nussmeier could get favorable one-on-one matchups on play-action attempts. If you were to ask the Trojans what their biggest fear is in this matchup, they would say being pressured for four quarters, and that’s exactly what LSU should do.
