Ana Pelaez Trivino was close to making her first cut at a major championship but was disqualified after her second round at the AIG Women’s Open.
Pelaez Trivino’s caddy, Miguel Evangelio Gomez-Escolar, used a distance measuring device on holes 10 and 18 on the Old Course at St. Andrews, as first reported by Golf WeekAlthough such devices are permitted on the LPGA, they are prohibited at the championship under a local model rule.
“It’s nobody’s fault,” Pelaez Trivino said afterward via her Instagram account (the comment was recorded in Spanish and translated). “If anything, it’s my responsibility. I got disqualified because (my caddie) used a laser in a tournament where it wasn’t allowed. I trusted my caddie and didn’t read the little paper, which was my responsibility, and he assumed you’re allowed to use a laser like any other tournament and didn’t read the little paper either.”
Pelaez Trivino shot 72-74 and is 2 over par after 36 holes, with the cut line estimated at 4 over par. She had missed the cut in her last five major starts since her amateur career.
“My caddie is still an incredible caddie and did a great job,” Pelaez Trivino added. “Actually, he helped so much, and if it wasn’t for the laser, we would have made the cut by two shots. At the end of the day, he’s incredible, and I’m very happy. I think we’re doing an incredible job, and at the end of the day, we did everything we could, and the love is bigger. … Life goes on. I’m going to keep living, keep playing, keep training, keep growing, and this video is more for me to show my love to Miguel anyway, because he’s not doing well.”
It was a tough rookie season for the 26-year-old LPGA rookie, as she has already missed seven cuts in eleven starts and has been disqualified once.
