Longtime soap opera star dies at age 70

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) — Drake Hogestyn, who appeared in nearly 4,300 episodes of the long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” has died at age 70.

Hogestyn’s family announced his death in a post on social media.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn,” the post reads. “He experienced the turning point of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he rose to the challenge with incredible strength and determination.

“After an incredible fight, he passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was the greatest husband, father, dad and actor. … We love him and will miss him all the days of our lives.”

Hogestyn portrayed John Black on the series for almost 40 years, first appearing in 1986. Actors of the series paid tribute to him.

“When I heard the news of Drake Hogestyn’s death, I felt like a punch in the gut,” Eileen Davidson, who portrayed Kristen DiMera on the series, said in a social media post. “A truly unique piece. So kind, hilarious and talented. Loved his family so much. I know he’s up there telling one of his many stories. Thanks for the laugh, Drake. I will always love and miss you. XO.”

“I will always remember you as a loving, loving father, husband and dear friend, but most of all as an incredible, passionate person, generous and extremely kind,” said Kristian Alfonso, who plays both Hope Williams Brady and Princess Gina on the series played on social media.

According to IMDB.com, Hogestyn won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Hottest Male Star twice. He also won an award for Favorite Couple with co-star Deidre Hall.

Hogestyn is survived by his wife, Victoria Ann Post, and four children.
