London phone thieves ‘manage to plunder man’s bank accounts’ after quick robbery in Stratford

A London man has issued a warning to others after falling victim to phone thieves who he says emptied all of his bank accounts. TikTok creator Harry posted a video in which he says his phone was stolen by three men on electric bikes in Stratford, east London. It’s not the first time he’s fallen victim to phone theft.

The second robbery was announced on Harry’s TikTok @harryautomotive, where the extent of both robberies was explained. The most recent robbery took place outside Westfield shopping centre and Stratford International train station in Stratford. He said: “The last time it happened was in Clapham at Cafe Sol, they took my phone and looted my personal bank account, all the money that was on it.”

“This time they made it even worse. They took money from my personal account and looted all my business accounts. This was of course a big setback for my business. I blocked all my cards and somehow they still managed to withdraw money.”

Harry explained that his phone was unlocked when it was taken, but he is still unsure how that gave them access to his bank accounts. He says he managed to find out the phone’s location, but after calling 101, he claims the police are not going to the address yet. He said: “They wanted to know the address but said they wouldn’t send police there unless they got more reports from the same address. If the police don’t come round, I want to go round myself, but you don’t know what kind of things you’re dealing with.”

Harry also wants to warn everyone to be very careful when walking around Stratford and the shopping centre. “I’ve heard it’s quite common in this area of Stratford at the moment and if you get robbed from modified bikes they can go up to 80mph so it’s impossible to catch them,” he said.

The Guardian reported in July that banks are stepping up security measures and increasingly relying on codes sent via text message to customers using mobile or online banking. Fraudsters have realised that in many cases they can access a person’s bank account by taking over a person’s phone. Thieves have also been known to “look over the shoulder” of victims to find out their PIN, and then use that as their password for online banking too. Otherwise, they will search the notes section of phones for written down passwords.

The Metropolitan Police offers the following advice to protect yourself from phone theft:

  • Don’t leave your phone, iPad, tablet or camera unattended, out of sight or on a table. Thieves can steal a phone from a table in seconds.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and only use your mobile phone when you feel safe.

  • When you no longer need it, put it away.
