London issues tornado warning as strong winds expected today

London may be facing a tornado as the Tornado & Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) has issued a warning for much of the region.

TORRO has reported that in addition to isolated tornadoes, wind gusts of 50 miles per hour are possible.

In addition, isolated thunderstorms must be expected.

The affected areas include Central England, the South East Midlands, East Anglia and large parts of the South East of England.

London issued a tornado warning

Regarding the discussion about the possible tornado, TORRO said: “Today a shortwave low will move northeast.

“Parts of south-west and southern England are already experiencing showers and isolated thunderstorms. These will move more towards the north-east this morning, while further inland showers and some thunderstorms will develop as the day warms.”

They added: “Low-level shear favors the formation of small storm clusters or lines. While low-level shear is relatively moderate, some flow support ahead of the trough could contribute to the formation of low-level rotation and perhaps one or two brief tornadoes.

“This phenomenon is most likely to occur in the southern counties of the area shown, but since the models are predicting more widespread rain showers during the day, the risk is presented in a broader sense.”

While TORRO has issued a tornado warning, the Met Office forecast strong winds with highs of 31 mph and lows of 26 mph.

The Met Office added: “Heavy, possibly thundery, rain will initially be mainly confined to the southern coasts but will spread across the region from late morning. Windy conditions will be breezy in the south of the area, with strong winds towards the coast. Maximum temperature 19°C.”
