Local man reports near-death experience after being hit by suspect fleeing police

A man who was waiting at a traffic light when he was hit by a man fleeing from police is still recovering and told WACHFOX News his life-changing story.

In a recent episode of “On Patrol Live,” Richland County police officers were pursuing a suspect right off Bush River Road when Charles Barnes was simply waiting at a traffic light and his life changed forever.

Barnes told WACHFOX News he never expected this.

“I came home and I was at the light, and all of a sudden this man ran the light, and another man ran the light, and boom, I was just hit, and my life flashed before my eyes, boom, out of the blue,” Barnes said.

According to authorities, it all started when police officers tried to stop a black Charger driven by Westley Anderson.

Authorities say the 25-year-old was not using the proper turn signals. Officers say when they turned on their lights, Anderson sped off and ran a red light in an attempt to get away.

The chase continued from Broad River Road onto Greystone Boulevard, at times reaching speeds of over 100 mph. Westley sped through an intersection and collided head-on with Barnes.

“I’m still confined to bed. It’s not like I can move anywhere. I can’t move anywhere. It’s not like I can run around and play. You know, I just thank the man up there for helping me by taking it day by day,” Barnes said.

Barnes’ car caught fire and he was seriously injured and spent several days in the hospital. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help him recover.

“I am very happy that my colleagues, my family and my friends who are loyal to me are coming to visit me. It is a very beautiful thing,” said Barnes.

After the accident, investigators found open alcoholic beverages and a handgun in Westley Anderson’s car. He faces several charges, including aggravated possession of a weapon and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Barnes is now at home recovering from a broken leg and several other injuries.
