Local business in the spotlight: Save our trees

There are so many environmental organizations in our area doing great work. But there aren’t many where we can all get involved and really make a difference. Join Save Our Trees!

We all love our trees. In fact, the City of Annapolis is a leader in expanding and maintaining our tree canopy. But there is a problem – invasive vines that climb up tree trunks and steal nutrients. And when that happens, the problems multiply: trees die, vines spread by birds, stability decreases because the vines grow like a “sail,” and more.

Save Our Trees takes a three-pronged approach: action, education and advocacy. You can take action by participating in a tree clearing event or cutting down trees in your own yard. You can help educate by organizing a community meeting to educate people about the issues. And you can advocate for the issues by making sure your local, regional, state and federal leaders know this is an important issue!

We spoke with them last year and a lot has happened since they expanded into schools, libraries and communities. Most notably, they became an official program of the Anne Arundel County Watershed Stewards Academy. And even more remarkable, they have saved (at last count) 5,117 trees!
