Liza Colón-Zayas from “The Bear” wins the award for best supporting actress in a comedy series at the 2024 Emmys

One of this year’s comedy all-stars has been officially crowned at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

The bear star Liza Colón-Zayas won the award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series, her first Emmy ever, at the annual ceremony on Sunday, September 15.

“Thank you for putting the mic down for me,” she joked. “Thank you to my husband David Zayas, he told me to write a speech and I didn’t because I didn’t think it was possible. How could I have thought it was possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett and Janelle and Sheryl Lee Ralph. I love you all, I adore you from the bottom of my heart. My mommy, mommy, thank you. My family, my grandchildren, thank you.”

“Thank you for giving me a new life with this show. And to all the Latinas who watch me: keep believing and go vote. Vote for your rights,” she concluded her speech.

Colón-Zayas is one of The bear‘s whopping 23 nominations. The show is also nominated for Best Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Lionel Boyce, Best Actress in a Comedy for Ayo Edebiri and Best Actor in a Comedy for Jeremy Allen White.

In the hit FX series about a Chicago restaurant and its diverse kitchen staff, 52-year-old Colón-Zayas plays Tina Marrero, who steadily rises through the ranks in White’s chef Carmy’s kitchen.

This was her very first Emmy nomination and she told diversity that it validated her decades-long career. “On World Day, it’s ‘We see you’ and I dare say, ‘Here are my colleagues.’ Carol Burnett raised me. Meryl Streep is a queen. Sheryl Lee Ralph, too. To be in the company of these women is incredible.”

In addition to Colón-Zayas, two other candidates were nominated Abbott Elementary School Stars, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph, along with Palm Royale’by Carol Burnett, Hacking Star Hannah Einbinder and Meryl Streep for Only murders in the building.

Burnett’s nomination in this category is her 26th Emmy nomination, most recently receiving an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Show for her birthday special last year. Carol Burnett: 90 years of laughter and love.

In Palm Royal, The legendary actress played Noma, the leader of the wealthy community who was unconscious for most of the series. However, Burnett, 91, told PEOPLE it was “a lot of fun” to speak gibberish for the role. She also shared her hopes for the show’s second season, which has since been greenlit.

“Now there’s a whole new secret about who (Noma) really is,” Burnett said of the big reveal of the season one finale: that Noma murdered her own roommate years ago and stole her identity.

The show received 11 nominations, including Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy for Kristen Wiig.

Einbinder is one of five Hacking Actors who received a nomination for the acclaimed third season of the HBO comedy.

The series received 16 nominations this year and has a total of 48 nominations across its three seasons. Paul W. Downs won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Jimmy Lusaque Jr., Jean Smart received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Christopher Lloyd and Kaitlin Olson were nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor and Outstanding Actress in a Comedy, respectively. Hacking was also nominated for outstanding comedy series and comedy writing.

Both Einbinder, 29, and Smart, 72, were previously nominated for their roles in the comedy, in which Smart plays legendary comedian Deborah Vance, who takes aspiring comedian Ava (Einbinder) under her wing. Smart won the Emmy for the show’s last two seasons.

James was nominated for her role as Abbott Elementary Schoolis the incredibly naive principal Ava Coleman of the last three years.

The show has been an awards hit since its premiere in 2021, securing a history-making win for Sheryl Lee Ralph in 2022 as Ralph earned the second-ever win for a Black woman in the category, and garnered seven nominations for its first season, which creator Quinta Brunson told PEOPLE at the time was a “dream.”

The ABC sitcom received a total of five nominations this year, including for Best Comedy Series, for Brunson as Best Actress in a Comedy, for Tyler James Williams as Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy and another nomination for Ralph in the same category as James.

More than a year after accession Only murders in the building as Broadway star Loretta Durkin – the lover of Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam – the 75-year-old Streep has received her first Emmy nomination for the Hulu series. The nomination is her sixth ever, her first since her nomination in 2020 for Big little liesfor Streep, the three-time winner.

Previously, she collected awards in 2017 as outstanding voice actress for Netflix’s The price of victoryin 2004 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for Angels in Americaand she received her first award in 1978 as outstanding actress in a miniseries for holocaust.

Short, 74, previously told PEOPLE that Streep “called him and said, ‘I want to be in (the series),'” but that it was “coincidence” that she joined as his on-screen lover.

“She’s fabulous,” he added of his co-star. “There’s no one who doesn’t adore her.”

Ralph is nominated for the third time in a row for her role as kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard. Abbott Elementary School. James is alongside her in this category and the sitcom has received three other nominations, including for Best Comedy Series.

Ralph, 67, won the award in 2022 after her first nomination, capturing the hearts of the audience with her stunning acceptance speech, which included a verse from Diane Reeves’ “Endangered Species.” She later told Jennifer Hudson that she had been “preparing the speech since I was 5 years old.”

“I was ready, you know, ever since Tinker Bell came out of the church tower and started making dreams come true, I’ve been practicing the speech,” she said, but admitted, “When they called my name, everything went out of my mind. I couldn’t remember absolutely anything.”
