NORMAN, Okla. – Josh Heupel leads the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers football team against the No. 13 Oklahoma Volunteers, where he led the Sooners to the national title as a Heisman quarterback but was fired as offensive coordinator.

Expect a wide range of emotions at Heupel’s homecoming as Oklahoma (3-0) plays its first SEC game against the Vols (3-0), the top-scoring team in college football.

It’s also a showdown of former five-star quarterbacks – Nico Iamaleava of Tennessee and Jackson Arnold of Oklahoma.

The Sooners defense did a good job of keeping Tennessee in check, although a 19-point deficit feels like a much bigger one given the dominance of Tennessee’s defense so far tonight. OU takes the lead again.

The Vols’ defensive dominance continues. Oklahoma moves the chains after a facemask penalty, but otherwise fails to get a first down on their own. Hawkins Jr. has no luck as Arnold’s replacement.

Max Gilbert sinks a 41-yard field goal to extend the Vols’ lead to 22-3 after a strong drive. Iamaleava scored on a 42-yard gain through Bru McCoy on the drive.

The Vols made it easy for Oklahoma’s offense and forced another punt. Tennessee’s defense was dominant.

The Vols get a couple of first downs but have to punt. Tennessee’s 50-yard gain was called back for a holding violation. Hawkins returned to the field for the second half to replace the struggling Arnold.

The Vols are in complete control of the game, holding the Sooners to minus 20 yards at halftime. It feels like the floodgates could open at any moment in the second half.

The Sooners and coach Brent Venables have had enough of Arnold, who has three turnovers. Arnold is benched for the final drive of the first half and rookie Michael Hawkins Jr. is brought in.

Tennessee takes a 19-3 lead thanks to Sampson’s rushing touchdown. Tennessee has the game completely under control.

Iamaleava fumbles again, but on the next play Arnold’s throw goes backwards and is recovered by the Vols. Tennessee has had a few chances after turnovers so far tonight.

Tennessee stops an Oklahoma run at the Sooners’ 1-yard line, forcing them to take a safety. The Vols take a 12-3 lead in the second quarter as the Sooners’ offense continues to falter.

The Vols have only one play on defense, as Arnold loses the ball on a drive up the middle. Tennessee immediately gets the ball back.

Iamaleava is sacked and loses the ball, giving the Sooners the ball at the Vols’ 6-yard line. Bad luck for Tennessee.

As time ran out, Tennessee tried to score one last play in the first quarter: a 66-yard touchdown pass between Iamaleava and Dont’e Thornton Jr. The pitch-and-catch gave Tennessee an early 10-3 lead against the Sooners on the road!

Oklahoma responds with a drive of its own deep into Tennessee territory, but the Sooners get stuck in similar fashion at the Vols’ 6-yard line, leading to an OU field goal and tying the game at 3-3. Tennessee takes over at its own 20-yard line.

The Vols penetrate deep into Sooners territory with a 38-yard catch-and-run between Nico Iamaleava and Bru McCoy to the OU 10-yard line, but the Vols settle for a field goal to give them the lead.

Oklahoma forces Tennessee into a three-and-out, but three plays later the Vols get the ball back when Jermod McCoy intercepts a pass from Arnold. Not much offense so far in this game.

The Vols put a lot of pressure on OU’s offense and forced another early punt. Tyre West scored a sack on second down, putting the Sooners on third-and-long.

The Vols can’t get anything done on their drive, they are out three times and decide to punt. The Sooners take over at their own 20-yard line after the punt went into the end zone.

Iamaleava had a nice fight on second down, but Tennessee was unable to convert on third down on a running play with Sampson. Only the Vols’ third punt all season.

Oklahoma tries fourth and short at midfield, but the Vols are able to stop the Sooners’ pass. Tennessee’s offense takes the lead with solid field position.

Tennessee wins the coin toss and heads to the second half. The Vols defense is first on. Let’s go, folks.

Heupel was honored before the game for returning to Norman as quarterback of the Sooners that won the 2000 national championship. Tennessee-Oklahoma is 20 minutes before kickoff.

Heupel made it to the stadium and entered the visitors’ locker room for the first time in his football career as a player or coach. The game marks his first return to Norman since being fired from OU’s coaching staff following the 2014 season.
