Listen to Sylvan Esso’s remix of “District Sleeps Alone” by The Postal Service

New version released ahead of Postal Service’s European tour to commemorate Give up 21st Anniversary

more than two Decades after the founding of the postal service — and so far only — album, Give upbecame a surprise platinum hit, and Sylvan Esso remixed one of its singles at the group’s request. The duo, which formed a decade after Give up release and has tiptoed in the footsteps of Postal Service with its approach to electropop and indie rock, has Put a new twist on “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.”

While the original Postal Service recording mixed choppy, lo-fi drum machine claps with angelic vocals, Sylvan Esso’s remix places more emphasis on the synths. Ben Gibbard’s vocals are up front, with Jenny Lewis’s background music swirling around him. Meanwhile, Jimmy Tamborello’s synths (and probably Sylvan Esso’s keys) appear and disappear around the vocals, leading to some echoey, dubby moments. The new arrangement gives Gibbard’s introspective revelation, “I was the one worth leaving,” a little more emphasis than the original.

“I love Sylvan Esso and was thrilled to hear the song through their ears,” Tamborello said in a statement. “It turned out so good, big and bouncy and fun!”

Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso shared their comments on their remix. “‘The District Sleeps Alone Tonight’ was a formative song for both of us,” they said. “Nick remembers hearing the promo lyrics from his car’s speakers while delivering pizza; Amelia remembers hearing it in the back of a delivery truck during her lunch break in freshman year. We both thought the song touched on something new at the time – and to be asked to reinterpret it now is an honor.”

The remix comes as The Postal Service embarks on a European tour with Gibbard’s other band, Death Cab for Cutie, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Give up and Death Cab’s TransatlanticismThe bands kicked off the tour last year in the States to commemorate the 20th with performances at Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl, as well as other historic venues.
