Linda Sun, former employee of Kathy Hochul, is accused of pursuing China’s interests

Linda Sun, a former aide to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, plotted to advance China’s interests while working for the New York state government, federal prosecutors alleged in an indictment unsealed Tuesday.

The indictment accuses Sun of failure to register as a foreign agent, visa fraud, human smuggling and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Her husband, Christopher Hu, is said to have facilitated the transfer of millions of dollars in bribes for personal gain, according to prosecutors.

Sun and her husband were arrested at their Long Island home on Tuesday morning, federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York and the FBI said. The FBI raided the Manhasset home in July.

Both are due to appear in federal court in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon. It was initially unclear whether they are represented by lawyers.

According to Avi Small, Hochul’s press secretary, Sun was hired by the executive chamber more than a decade ago and fired last year.

“We terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct, promptly reporting her actions to law enforcement, and assisting them throughout the process,” Small said in a statement to ABC News.

Sun worked in state government for about 15 years before being fired last year from her post as deputy commissioner for strategic business development at the New York Department of Labor. She previously served as Hochul’s deputy chief of staff and in former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration.

The indictment alleges that, at the request of Chinese government officials and representatives of the Chinese Communist Party, Sun denied Taiwanese government officials access to high-ranking New York State officials, altered New York State officials’ messages about China, and arranged meetings for delegations from the Government of the People’s Republic of China with New York State government officials.

In exchange for these and other actions, Sun allegedly received economic and other benefits from China, including facilitation of millions of dollars in transactions for Hu’s China-based business operations, travel benefits, event tickets, promotion of a close family friend’s business, employment for Sun’s cousin in the People’s Republic of China, and Nanjing-style salted ducks prepared by the personal chef of a Chinese government official and delivered to the residence of Sun’s parents, according to the indictment.

“As alleged, the defendant and her husband, while purporting to serve the people of New York as Deputy Chief of Staff in the New York State Executive Chamber, were in fact pursuing the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said in a statement. “The illegal scheme enriched the defendant’s family by millions of dollars.”
