Although Emily in Paris officially returns for season five, Collins could take a break from her character’s iconic aesthetic.
When Collins cut her long brown hair into a chic, blunt bob earlier this summer, the 35-year-old actress may have wanted to create a little visible distance between herself and her counterpart at the marketing agency.
“A lot of people call me Emily,” Lily Collins recently told a reporter when discussing the show’s cultural impact. “I never thought I would be part of something that would become this. You know, I think it’s a real blessing, and it’s something that brought me to Rome, and so many amazing things have come out of it. And at the end of the day, it’s a huge gift to be part of something that offers people escapism and just joy.”
Still, she’d probably appreciate it if people used her real name—and recently, Collins has shown surprising approaches to street style and red carpet appearances while promoting the series. Sure, Collins has ventured in and out of Emily’s comfort zone at press events, but all three looks on September 16 seem decidedly contrary to her character’s fashion beliefs.
Before her performance on Good morning America, Collins was photographed in a sexy merlot leather set with a crocodile-like finish, pairing a low-cut, long-sleeved crop top with a matching leather ruffle pencil skirt. Although Emily could be supporting the skirt’s silhouette, the muscle-hugging top and deep red hue are distinctly Collins.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Collins pulled out an item of clothing I don’t remember Emily ever wearing: a simple pair of jeans. Later in the day, Collins was spotted in another crop top, which she paired with light-wash straight-leg jeans. And while I’m sure Emily would approve of the hint of structure in her tailored black blazer, I just can’t imagine her walking the streets of Paris—or, I guess, Rome—in those fancy mesh ballet flats.
With the exception of her iconic ski outfit in season four (which I still dream about), Emily Cooper shies away from dark colors and monochromatic looks unless they fit with the rest of her maximalist aesthetic. The modern-day Carrie Bradshaw prefers voluminous, sculptural pieces with even more eye-catching statement accessories. Pants of any kind have little to no place in her wardrobe.
And yet Lily Collins wore the same black crop top with a dark cherry red suit with oversized lapels, proving once again to be an excellent source of inspiration for her fall wardrobe.
