Lexington is the scene of the “toughest two minutes in sports”

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – More than 170 first responders flocked to Lexington to compete in the Southeast Classic Firefighter Challenge, which many call the “toughest two minutes in sports.”

“My personal goal? Survival. That’s it!” said Caden Wilson, participant from the St. Lucie County Fire District.

“The buzzer goes off. You have to carry a hose up the tower, pull it up and come back down. You have the Keiser sled machine, guide posts and pull the hose. At the end there is a big 100-foot dummy drag,” Wilson explained all the tasks the competitors have to master.

Lexington hosts the southeastern portion of the competition. Lexington’s women’s team has won the World Championship twice.

They are not just aiming for this competition. Anyone who competes today can make it to the national and global stage.

A competitor of the Lexington Fire Department is Sarah McGill.

“Oh yeah, we’re always going for a personal best. That’s one thing about individual competitions where you’re always competing against yourself. We travel all over the country and compete all season long,” McGill said.

While winning can be a source of bragging rights, the point of competition is to help others improve.

“The training we incorporate into this course is aimed at being able to perform the tasks on the job,” Wilson said.
