Latest forecast shows storm moving towards Louisiana, meteorologists warn of “life-threatening storm surge”

Francine was upgraded to a hurricane on Tuesday evening and is expected to make landfall on the Louisiana coast on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

In their latest warning, NHC meteorologists warned of “life-threatening storm surges and hurricane-force winds” in Louisiana.

According to an NHC report at 11 a.m. ET:

  • Location: About 150 miles southwest of Morgan City, La., about 85 miles west of New Orleans

  • Maximum sustained winds: 90 mph

  • Current movement: Northeast at 13 miles per hour

According to meteorologists, Francine is expected to make landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon or evening.

“Francine is expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rainfall, with local amounts of up to 12 inches in southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, extreme southern Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle through Thursday night,” a hurricane center warning warned. “This rainfall could result in significant flash flooding and urban flooding.”

WAFB, the CBS affiliate station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, reported that school districts across the state canceled classes on Tuesday and several will remain closed on Wednesday.

President Biden approved a state of emergency declaration for Louisiana on Tuesday after Governor Jeff Landry requested federal assistance after declaring the emergency on Monday.

  • East of Grand Isle, Louisiana, to the Alabama-Florida border

  • Vermilion Bay, Louisiana: 5–10 feet.

  • Port Fourchon, Louisiana, to the mouth of the Mississippi River, Louisiana: 4–7 feet.

  • Mouth of Pearl River, Louisiana, to Ocean Springs, Mississippi: 4–6 feet.

  • Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana: 4–6 feet.

  • Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Mississippi-Alabama border: 3–5 feet.

  • Cameron, La., to Intracoastal City, La.: 3-5 feet.

  • Lake Maurepas, Louisiana: 3–5 feet.

Severe weather warnings mean that conditions are expected in an area for the next 36 hours; weather stations indicate that the weather is expected within the next 48 hours.
