Larry LaFave honored for long-standing service to the Watertown youth baseball club

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – A dedicated individual was honored Monday evening for his years of service.

The large field at the Watertown Fairgrounds hosted an All-Star doubleheader.

First was the City of Watertown 10U Baseball League All-Star Game, followed by the 13U Baseball League All-Star Game. This is a chance for the youth to showcase their talent in front of family and friends on the main field.

“This is the end-of-the-year all-star game for the 10-and-under and 13-and-under baseball leagues,” said Scott Weller, director of the city’s parks and recreation department. “You know, we’ve had a rainy summer, but it’s still great to see the kids come together and play this game. A lot of time and effort goes into it. Larry LaFave does a great job organizing it. Special thanks to all the coaches who put in a lot of time throughout the season.”

Weller mentioned Larry LaFave. He was the driving force behind these two leagues for a long time. He was honored by the city for all his years of dedication to the children. LaFave is retiring.

“I coached for 29 years and retired a while ago,” he said. “This is my 35th year in the All-Star Game.”

There is one group he will miss the most.

“The players,” he said. “Most of them, but I’m at an age where a younger man has to step in.”

“He has put in a lot of time and effort over the years. We will certainly miss that and miss him very much,” Weller said, “but he does a fantastic job.”

These players should certainly appreciate the opportunity Larry LaFave has given them over the years to play a sport they love.
