Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban and current Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin used to work on the same coaching staff in Tuscaloosa. From 2013-17Kiffin was the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator when Saban was still roaming the sidelines.

Since then, Kiffin has transferred to Ole Miss and Saban now works on College GameDay. During Saban’s brief time on television, we saw him a humorousjoyful and committed side, which was in stark contrast to his demanding, hard and often negative behavior as a coach. His numerous appearances in commercials also showed us other positive qualities of Saban.

It was all a big shock for Kiffin. As noted, Kiffin was able to get a close-up look at Saban as offensive coordinator for more than three years — and saw none of what college football fans have seen in recent weeks. When Kiffin appeared briefly on GameDay to talk about this personality change, he mentioned that it was like seeing a completely different person.

“I love Coach, but I never saw that side of him,” Kiffin said joked. “I actually saw a commercial. I paused it, replayed it, filmed it on my phone – I sent it to Kirby (Smart), sent it to Sark (Steve Sarkisian) and all these guys and I said, ‘Who is that?’ “Dude, man? This guy is joking.”

In fact, it’s pretty entertaining to see this side of Saban. And while Kiffin probably would have seen a happier Saban every now and then, I’m sure winning two national titles in Tuscaloosa helped offset that loss.

Ole Miss plays Kentucky at noon and Alabama faces Georgia in a must-see battle of heavyweights at 7:30 p.m.
