Kyle Walker: England and Manchester City defender says his father’s tough love made him an elite footballer

Walker admitted that his mother Tracey gave him the “caring support” he needed and that it took a long time for him to convince his father with his style of play on the court.

“Sometimes it was very, very difficult to get in the car. My mother would always say, ‘Michael, leave him alone, he did well,'” Walker said.

“I could have scored three goals. But he would have said, ‘No, you should have scored six goals.’ It was only when I got older in my career that he actually said, ‘All right, well played, son.'”

“After a few years at City, I think he thought, ‘you know, he can actually play football’.”

Walker said he “doesn’t do the same” with his own children when it comes to criticizing their achievements, although he does adopt some aspects of his father’s parenting style.

“I still feel like I’m trying to teach the guys some of the things in life that he taught me about being a winner,” he added.

“With my children, I don’t let them win. If I keep letting them win and then they lose, it will be traumatic for them.

“We’ll play a little game in the garden or something and I’ll do my best because I feel like that’s what’s going to teach them.”
