Kyle Shanahan is “optimistic” that the 49ers will find a solution with Trent Williams

The wait for what will happen between the 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continued this week, and it’s not the only unresolved contract crisis involving a member of the team.

Left tackle Trent Williams has three years left on his current contract, but he has not reported to training camp this summer. None of the money Williams is owed under that contract is guaranteed, and adjustments to it could pave the way to getting him on the practice field to prepare him for the upcoming season.

While a performance On KNBR on Thursday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would not provide any information on what kind of talks are underway, but said both sides are having those talks with the goal of bringing Williams back to the team.

“We have many discussions with his agent,” Shanahan said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “Trent is not here right now, obviously not in camp. I think he’s in Houston, but I’m not sure. But we’re talking a lot with his agent and hopefully we can figure it out. Like I’ve said all along, I’m optimistic we can get it done, but obviously the sooner the better.”

Williams is experienced enough that the missed practice time is less of a concern than it would be for another player. He would ideally have some time left with the team to prepare for Week One, but it’s unclear when something will shake up the status quo with the Niners.
