Kyle Schwarber hits three home runs for the second time this season as the Phillies beat the Blue Jays 10-9

TORONTO (AP) — Kyle Schwarber’s third home run of the game was a three-run drive in the ninth inning that gave the Philadelphia Phillies a lead, and they beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-9 on Tuesday night after allowing six runs in the first inning.

“We’re proud of that. We make sure we never drop out of the game,” said Schwarber. “We always feel like we’re going to be there, and we did that really well tonight.”

Schwarber hit his twelfth home run of the season and hit another home run in the fourth inning before his hit with no outs in the ninth on the ninth pitch from Chad Green (4-5), a 96 mph fastball. Right fielder George Springer barely reacted to Schwarber’s 426-foot line drive that reached the second deck and hit his 31st home run of the season.

Schwarber became the first Phillies player to have two three-home run games in a season. He finished 5-for-6 with six RBIs and came within a cycle triple by adding a double in the third inning and an RBI single in the seventh. It was Schwarber’s third three-home run game and his first five-hit game. The first two home runs came off Chris Bassitt.

“He carried us tonight,” said Kody Clemens of Philadelphia.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 4 for 5 with a two-run homer for Toronto, which took a 6-1 lead after one inning and knocked Phillies starter Tyler Phillips out of the game two-thirds of the way through an inning. Phillips allowed six runs on eight hits, including two-run homers by Daulton Varsho and Addison Barger.

“Even after the first inning, everyone was in a good mood,” said Schwarber. “There was no feeling of defeat. It just felt like everyone had a really good attitude about it and you could tell.”

Orion Kerkering (4-2) threw a scoreless eighth inning. Matt Strahm, the Phillies’ seventh pitcher, allowed Leo Jiménez’s home run in the ninth inning but finished the game with his second save in eight chances.

“I thought our bullpen did a great job of keeping them in check,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.

NL East leader Philadelphia hit a season-high 18 hits and won its third straight victory.

Green made his second consecutive save after blowing one on Sunday in Minnesota. He made 16 consecutive save opportunities to start the season.

Edmundo Sosa opened the ninth with a single and reached third base on Clemens’ double before Schwarber’s home run tied the score at 10-8.

“When he’s at his best, he might be the best hot hitter in all of baseball,” Bassitt said.

In the first inning, Phillips struck out two of the ten batters he faced and left the field after Springer’s second hit.

“Going out there and doing that feels pretty bad,” Phillips said.

Nick Castellanos and Bryson Stott each scored a run in the third inning, and Schwarber’s second home run cut the score to 6-4 in the fourth inning.

Guerrero hit his 28th home run in the sixth inning against former Toronto teammate Taijuan Walker, giving the Blue Jays an 8-4 lead.

Philadelphia responded with a three-run seventh inning against three Toronto relief pitchers.

TRAINING ROOM

Phillies: INF Alec Bohm (left hand) is recovering more slowly than expected and will not play in this two-game series, Thomson said, adding that Bohm could return Thursday against Miami. Bohm left last Thursday’s game against Atlanta after two innings and has not played since. … Castellanos was substituted in the bottom half of the seventh inning after being hit on the left leg by a pitch in the top of the inning.

Blue Jays: SS Bo Bichette (right calf) ran the bases Monday and will do so again Wednesday. … Barger left the game after six innings because of left knee soreness.

Next

After being named AL Pitcher of the Month for August, Blue Jays RHP Bowden Francis (8-3, 3.66 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start of September on Wednesday against Phillies LHP Cristopher Sánchez (9-9, 3.49).
