KSHB 41 Weather Blog | Cold front duels with Kansas City Chiefs at NFL opener

Have a nice day, dear Game Day blog readers.

Mother Nature is a diehard Chiefs fan and she’s determined to be on top of the season opener. Although she’s decided to hold off on the rain, she plans to give everyone a frosty welcome. Let’s take a look at the latest weather forecast to see where and when that sudden drop in temperature might occur.

Temperature drop

Tailgaters, fire up your grills! Kickoff is going to be a scorching hot day, so stay hydrated and wear your Chiefs gear with pride. But don’t worry, Mother Nature has a surprise in store. As the game progresses, a cold front will move in, providing a refreshing change that will have you reaching for your favorite Chiefs hoodie tomorrow. It’s like Mahomes throwing a perfect spiral – just when you think the heat is unbearable, the weather cools down to the perfect temperature.

Rain potential
Although no widespread rain is expected, there is a chance of isolated showers or light rain in some areas. Let’s see what happens with this weather system.

This land front is coming from the north and therefore has to work with the existing moisture supply. To the south, a stationary front is holding onto moisture from the Gulf, while a low pressure system to the southwest is adding a wedge of dry air just south of Kansas City. This combination could result in localized precipitation.

So what’s the deal?
While soil moisture is currently limited, humidity is sufficient for localized rain and possibly some storms. Dew points around 18°C indicate showers, but the lack of a sustained moisture source suggests precipitation will be short-lived. Although isolated lightning and thunder are possible, the overall risk of severe weather is low.

So you have to be aware that the air is moist enough for a brief downpour, but not for continuous rain. Think of it as a short rain delay – a brief pause before it really starts. Right now, rain is forecast between 5 and 8 p.m., and I’m confident the front will be well southeast of Kansas City by 8 or 9 p.m.

Here’s what the radar might look like at 7:20 p.m. Keep in mind that this is the output of a model and the location of individual showers or small storms may vary, but there’s a chance they could be near the metro by kickoff.
