Protests in Calcutta

Several doctors and students from various government hospitals, including RG Kar Medical College, staged massive protests and sit-ins over the incident.

On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a strong statement demanding immediate action on the matter and threatening nationwide protests if the demands are not met within 48 hours.

“The entire medical community of India is shocked beyond words by this brutal murder… This crime is an indication of the anarchy and insecurity that prevails on the campus,” the IMA said.

Earlier, CPI(M) workers had held a rally in Calcutta and demanded justice in the murder case.

“The city we used to call ‘city of joy’ has now become ‘city of bhay’ (city of fear). Not even a doctor is safe here. The principal (of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital) is close to CM Mamata Banerjee… The Kolkata police commissioner suppressed the case… We demand a judicial inquiry into the matter,” Md Salim, secretary of the CPI(M) in West Bengal, told ANI.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she would demand the death penalty for the accused.
