    Scattered wind and flash flood warnings remain in effect as East Tennessee grapples with the catastrophic aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

    The National Weather Service warns that conditions are still dangerous due to strong gusts and the risk of flooding and winds remains. General flood warnings have expired and conditions are improving in Knoxville, but new concerns about a possible failure of the Nolichucky Dan mean flash flood warnings are in effect below Nolichucky Dan.

    Flash flood warnings Continue into East Tennessee until noon for:

    • North Central Cocke County
    • Southwest Greene County
    • Southeastern Hamblen County

    A Flood warning valid until 10 a.m. for:

    • Cocke County
    • Greene County
    • Jefferson County
    • Sevier County

    A Strong wind warning valid until 11 a.m. for:

    • Blount County
    • Cocke County
    • Great Smoky Mountains
    • East Polk County
    • Johnson County
    • Sevier County
    • Southeast Carter County
    • Southeast Greene County
    • Southeast Monroe County
    • Unicoi County

    Safety tips for driving in strong winds

    The National Weather Service recommends the following guidelines to stay safe while driving in high winds:

    Maintain a safe distance from conspicuous vehicles (large vehicles that may be difficult to maneuver), watch for fallen trees, power lines or debris, keep a firm grip on your steering wheel, and use caution when crossing overpasses/bridges.

    “When you have high profile vehicles like vans, buses and some SUVs, you just have to be extra careful and give people space between you and other drivers. The gusts you know are almost instantaneous,” Dalton said.
