Kingmakers doesn’t have a release date yet, but a film is secured with Sonic production company Story Kitchen

Developed by Redemption Road and published by tinyBuild, Kingmakers recently surprised everyone with its eccentric (and technically impressive) first trailer, and although we don’t have a release date yet, Hollywood already seems interested in bringing the film to the big screen.

Via GamesBeat, we learned that Story Kitchen, a recently formed production company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog films and the upcoming Tomb Raider animated series (as well as many other gaming-related projects), has signed a deal to help develop a live-action film based on the yet-to-be-released third-person shooter.

“Kingmakers’ action, world-building, and fascinating sci-fi make it the perfect mix to build a driving new franchise in Hollywood… We’ve always been huge fans of tinyBuild. As a publisher, they put out great games that we love to play. We’ve been closely watching the things they’re working on and trying to find the next best opportunity to partner with them,” said Story Kitchen co-founder Dmitri M. Johnson. When you look at Kingmakers’ simple but powerful premise, it’s easy to see how it could be cleverly adapted into a straightforward action film that serves multiple subgenres at once.

While much of Story Kitchen’s promised output of films and series has yet to appear in any form, it’s safe to say that the Sonic movies have done reasonably well and even gained new fans for Sega’s flagship franchise, which is more than many veteran Hollywood producers and film companies can say about their game-to-film adaptations. At this point, it’s hard to say if Kingmakers will be any good at all after the first two to four hours of mindlessly shooting medieval knights and running them over with a truck, but perhaps the world is ready for a spiritual successor to Army of Darkness (minus the Deadites and walking skeletons, of course).

As for the game itself, the Steam page currently promises a 2024 release and not much else, but perhaps we’ll learn more about it sooner rather than later. We know for sure that some light tactical and co-op elements are part of the overall experience, so it should be interesting to see how it all fits together (or not) beyond the attractive basic premise once we get our hands on it. The game is also set to release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
