The classic anime film from 1989 Kiki’s little delivery service turned 35 on July 29, 2024. Just in time for this big celebration, the official Studio Ghibli shop is selling its coveted “Naughty Jiji” vase again, but now with an updated look.

Donguri Sora, the official online store of Studio Ghibli, is selling a flower vase modeled after the lovable cat Jiji from the film. This home decor features the cute cat sitting in a small coffee cup with his legs playfully propped up. The flowers bloom upward from Jiji, catching the black cat’s full attention. The vase features a stylized design of a black cat, recreating the iconic scene from the film where Jiji finds a cup with a cat that looks like him on a shelf. This item is currently on sale for 4,620 yen (US$31.42).

Kiki’s signature delivery bag from the film was reissued in late July with a retail price of 24,200 yen (US$157.81). Donguri Sora has also restocked its popular “Kiki’s Little Delivery Service Basket Trays” – a decorative item shaped like a birdcage from the film that can hold items like bars of soap, candles, or even a small Jiji cat toy. Perhaps surprisingly compared to the previous items, a Zippo lighter featuring Jiji and other Studio Ghibli characters was also recently sold – an item aimed more at adult anime fans than a younger audience.

In the Japanese version of Kiki’s little delivery serviceJiji is voiced by Minami Takayama, who is best known as the voice of Conan Edogawa (the child version of Jimmy Kudo) in Detective Conan (Case closed). However, in the 1997 Disney English dub, Jiji was played by the late Phil Hartman, who made a name for himself in the comedy world with his performance in Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons And Pee-Wee’s PlayhouseWhile fans generally appreciate Hartman’s performance as Jiji and the English dubbing of Kiki’s little delivery service Overall, there is one aspect of the localization that contradicts the original version of the film.

Disney has changed the ending of Studio Ghibli’s Kiki’s Delivery Service for the English dubbing

A scene in the original Japanese version of Kiki’s little delivery service shows that Kiki can no longer communicate with Jiji and loses her ability to fly. Although Kiki regains her ability to fly at the end of the film, Jiji never speaks to Kiki like before and continues to speak like a cat. In the English dub, however, Jiji regains his human voice in the celebration scene. Hayao Miyazaki, the director of Kiki’s little delivery servicestated that Kiki’s loss of the ability to speak to Jiji was a sign that she was growing up and essentially saying goodbye to the wonders of childhood. The Disney dub undermines this message by suggesting that it was a temporary problem caused by Kiki’s stress at work. Disney was again criticized for its English dub of Spirited Awaybecause the ending eliminates the ambiguity of the original.

Kiki’s little delivery service and other Studio Ghibli films can be streamed on Max. The Boy and the HeronMiyazaki’s latest animated film from Studio Ghibli, will be available to stream on Max on September 6, 2024.
