Key to victory: How the Rams can return from Arizona with a win

The Los Angeles Rams will face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday in Week 2 of NFL action. The Rams may be fresh off a loss, but head coach Sean McVay has a 5-0 record against the Cardinals after a loss with an average margin of victory of 15.4 points. Here are the keys to winning this week.

1. Keep Kyler Murray in the pocket

The Rams have typically defended Kyler Murray well and made life difficult for the Cardinals quarterback, but a big reason for that was Aaron Donald, a player who constantly put pressure on Murray.

While Jared Verse had a good debut against the Lions, he struggled at times defending the edge and lost control. Against Murray, it will be important for the Rams defense to stay disciplined in their pass rush lanes. The Rams need to be able to force Murray to win from the pocket. If the Rams can keep Murray in the pocket, they can force him to make some mistakes that could change the game.

2. Stop the Cardinals running game

In Week 1, the Rams defense allowed a 66.7 percent run success rate. If they allow that against the Cardinals, they will lose. The Cardinals offense had one of the most effective running games in the NFL last year. James Conner averaged just 3.1 yards per carry last week, but Arizona will look to get its running game going against a Los Angeles defense that was banged up at times against the Lions.

Once again, it will be important for the Rams to get Kyler Murray to beat them with his arm. If the defense allows Arizona to be balanced, it could be a long day. The Rams’ defensive front will need to be strong against the run to give the linebackers success at the second level.

3. Involve more players in the offense

While Cooper Kupp targeting more than 20 balls is impressive and shows he’s back, it’s just not sustainable. The Rams’ offensive identity needs to be more than just Stafford passing the ball to Kupp. Demarcus Robinson and TuTu Atwell are two capable wide receivers. Jordan Whittington has also shown potential. The Rams’ passing game needs to become more diverse.

The same goes for the running game. Kyren Williams had two of his best games against the Cardinals last year. Despite that, he still managed over 100 yards in the second game, where he had 16 carries and Royce Freeman had 13. The Rams’ offense will be at its best when the entire group works together as a unit.

4. Limit damage from Trey McBride in the middle

Last week, the Rams did a respectable job defending tight end Sam LaPorta. The Lions tight end had just four pass catches and failed to get into the end zone. Trey McBride will pose another difficult challenge on Sunday. McBride had five pass catches for 30 yards last week, but managed 60 or more yards in every game against the Rams last season.

Given the Rams’ linebacker positions, there is an obvious mismatch at McBride that Arizona can exploit. The Rams can use players like Kam Curl and Quentin Lake to back up that athleticism, but it will be important for Los Angeles to eliminate Kyler Murray’s safety net on offense.

5. Protect Matthew Stafford

The Rams’ offensive line will be in slightly better shape than last week. Rob Havenstein is expected to play along with Jonah Jackson. Joe Noteboom is on the injured list along with Steve Avila. Kevin Dotson is also injured but is expected to play. This means the Rams will have to rely on young players like Beaux Limmer and Warren McClendon to produce.

Stafford was under a lot of pressure last week and that’s a tough world for any quarterback. The Rams need to rely on the running game and make life easier for Stafford. If McVay can call a play where Stafford can play efficiently and without pressure, they should be able to move the ball.
