Kevin Feige’s four pieces of advice to Ryan Reynolds “haunted” him during the filming of Deadpool and Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds has reflected on filming Deadpool and Wolverine, revealing the advice of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige that “haunted” him during the writing process of the Marvel Phase 5 film.
“He said something that sounds very pedantic and probably shouldn’t be said out loud, but weirdly it actually served as a creative engine,” Reynolds told an audience at the Fast Company Innovation Festival (H/T Deadline). “He was like, ‘Make every scene great.’ And I said, ‘Thanks, Kev. Sounds good.'”
However, these four pieces of advice came back to Reynolds when he was in the midst of creative work on the MCU’s first R-rated film. The Deadpool actor admitted that it “haunted” him, adding, “‘To make it great’ – that’s hard.”
Another argument involved a back and forth over an unknown moment in Deadpool and Wolverine that ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor.
Reynolds explains: “There was only one line in the entire film that they asked me to cut… and they were right!”
Reynolds added: “As soon as someone says something like, ‘Ryan, Bob Iger here. Would love if you took out that one line. It’s going to make life really difficult for us here.’ As soon as they say that, there’s just something in my brain that says, ‘Gotta hold the line! Honey!'”
Of course, all’s well that ends well. Deadpool and Wolverine grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office. Reynolds even managed to make a small profit from the deleted line by eventually replacing it with a playful reference to an iconic Disney character.
“Once the fog of war lifts and you think about it again, you think, ‘Of course I can take that out. Can I say something about Pinocchio instead?’ And the answer is yes,” Reynolds recalls.
