Kerry Washington and the cast of “Scandal” unite for reproductive rights

The scandal The cast spoke out in favor of reproductive rights on Sunday, documenting their reunion event in Michigan with a blitz on social media.

Kerry Washington – who played Washington fixer Olivia Pope on Shonda Rhimes’ hit ABC political drama – was joined by her former costars Tony Goldwyn, Guillermo Díaz, Bellamy Young, Katie Lowes, Dan Bucatinsky, Scott Foley, Portia de Rossi, George Newbern, Jeff Perry and Cornelius Smith Jr. The ensemble came together – five years after their show was canceled in 2018 – to support the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign’s nationwide “Fighting for Reproductive Freedom” bus tour, and many of them shared the day’s events on their Instagram Stories.

Since launching on September 3 in Palm Beach, Florida, the bus tour has made stops in key states, targeting both Democratic and Democratic communities to campaign for the Vice President and her running mate in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The scandal The crew arrived at a campaign rally in Madison Heights on Sunday, the first stop on the Michigan bus tour.

“Why are we here? Why is the occupation of scandal in Michigan?” Washington asked a crowd of about 130 people at the headquarters of Plumbers Local Union 98, according to the Detroit NewsThe actress, producer and activist shared parts of her speech on Instagram, while the full speech was captured by her production company Simpson Street Impact on her TikTok account.

“We’re here because we know Michigan is where it’s at. We know that even though we’re told regularly — because we’ve been lucky enough to be part of a really special show — that we have to ‘fix things,’ that we have to ‘handle it,’ (that we) have to come in and take care of a crisis,” she said, borrowing her character Olivia Pope’s famous catchphrases, “the reality is that you are the real gladiators.” (On scandalOlivia and her team of experienced fixers were known as the Gladiators.)

Smith Jr., a Detroit native, added: “We see you. We feel you and we are with you. This is our time. We have to take it up with our time and our energy.”

Washington warned, according to the Detroit Newsthat voters can either elect Harris president “or we can wake up to the nightmare of having a president like we’ve had before who we know will attack our rights. (A man) who has consistently attacked reproductive rights in the courts and who has made it frighteningly difficult for women to get life-saving medical treatment.”

When he entered the stage, scandaltold the crowd to much laughter, “I’m here not just as your former president, but as the husband of a woman who has fought her entire life for equality and equal rights with the men in her life, especially the men in her workplace. I stand here as a father of two daughters who are less free and have fewer rights than the generation before them. I stand here today as an American man who is outraged that a third of all American women of childbearing age are living under a Trump abortion ban.”

In 2015 scandal aired a groundbreaking abortion episode that changed the way television covered the issue. The episode addressed legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and featured Olivia (Washington) having an abortion, with the baby most likely being Fitz’s (Goldwyn).

Washington recently said The Hollywood Reporter about her commitment to the 2024 elections: “It’s not just about candidates and election cycles. It’s about building a future where everyone understands their voice and their power in our democracy.”

On Monday, when the Reproductive Freedom Bus Tour continues, Severance pay Star Adam Scott will appear in Ann Arbor to speak to supporters and volunteers on the University of Michigan campus.

The scandal The reunion, meanwhile, follows Washington and Goldwyn’s recent reunion at the Democratic National Convention, where they were among the evening’s Hollywood hosts and surprised everyone with a joint appearance on stage. Goldwyn hosted the opening night; Washington hosted the closing night, when Harris officially accepted the party’s nomination.

This is the latest example of Hollywood coming out for Harris-Walz. Next up is the casting of HBO’s Veep will gather on September 29 for a virtual table read organized by Wisconsin Democrats about an episode that went viral when President Biden withdrew his candidacy for re-election and endorsed Harris. Veep Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus had already moderated a panel discussion with the country’s eight Democratic governors during the week of the DNC.
