Kent man charged with violent attack near Seattle Great Wheel

In a shocking incident captured on video, a 22-year-old Kent man was charged with three counts of assault following a violent attack near the Seattle Great Wheel.

The brutal beating occurred on April 10 as two women and a man were returning home from work. Fortunately, the victims are expected to recover, and their quest for justice was aided by a concerned neighbor who recorded the incident on her cellphone.

A witness, alerted by an argument on the street below, immediately began recording and then called 911. According to Seattle police, the victims – a brother, sister and their cousin – made comments about a black BMW SUV parked uncomfortably close to their car.

Unbeknownst to them, the driver, identified as Dell’Lil Downs, had rolled down his window and took offense to their comments. He was seen on video getting out of his vehicle dressed all in orange, leading to a heated exchange in which Downs yelled at her.

The situation escalated when the nurse, who is 5’3″ tall and weighs 110 pounds, tried to intervene by snatching the cell phone from Downs’ hand. In response, he slapped her in the face with the palm of his hand and she lost consciousness.

Downs then directed his aggression at the brother, who tried to defuse the situation with his hands raised. Downs punched him in the face and then attacked the cousin, throwing her to the ground.

Despite the presence of security personnel nearby, Downs fled the scene in his vehicle. It took about six minutes for the sister, who had suffered a severe concussion, to regain consciousness.

Seattle police were able to quickly trace the vehicle’s license plate to Downs and learned that he had been in court earlier that day. His name may sound familiar, as he is the brother of Janeice Downs, who is accused of leading an organized theft ring that stole $500,000 worth of Lululemon clothing.

Notably, the attack occurred just hours after Janeice and her mother, Janeice Wiley, were indicted for their alleged involvement in the organized shoplifting. Investigators noted that Downs was wearing the same orange outfit in court footage and later found a photo of him wearing orange at his workplace.

Based on this evidence, the King County District Attorney’s Office charged Downs with third-degree assault and two counts of fourth-degree assault.

A check of his criminal history revealed convictions as a juvenile for first-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree assault, and drive-by shooting in 2017. He was convicted of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) and obstructing the report of domestic violence in 2021. He has not been convicted of a crime as an adult.

He appeared at arraignment and pleaded not guilty. Downs is currently out of custody awaiting trial.

The incident is a stark reminder that violence can quickly erupt anywhere and how important good witnesses and video evidence are to ensure justice is done.
