Kensington Palace gives rare update on status of Princess Kate’s return to work

We will have to wait a while before we see the Princess of Wales on the famous balcony of Buckingham Palace again.

Kensington Palace confirmed that Princess Kate will not attend the rehearsal for this year’s Trooping the Colour on June 8, a ceremonial event held annually to mark the current British monarch’s birthday, alongside the royal family. Her attendance at the June 15 event has yet to be confirmed.

Normally, Kate serves as the inspecting officer at the ceremony during the traditional Colonel’s Review, but this year that role will go to Lieutenant General James Bucknall, KCB, CBE, reports People.

This rare update on Kate’s return to work comes as the Queen undergoes “preventive chemotherapy” to treat her cancer, a condition she announced in a personal video message on March 22.

But Kate had been missing for months before her announcement as she had to pause royal duties to recover from abdominal surgery in January, the palace said. She last made an official public appearance on December 25, when she took part in the royal family’s traditional walk to church on Christmas morning at the Sandringham estate.

Although she has not attended any official events since then, Kate was last seen in public in March, when she was videoed leaving a farm shop in Windsor with her husband Prince William by her side. And earlier this week, some publications reported that Kate had been seen running errands with her family, although no photos or videos of the outing were released.

“The Princess will resume her official duties as soon as her medical team allows,” a source told Harper’s Bazaar in March. “She is in good spirits and focused on making a full recovery.”

In the meantime, the source said, William will “continue to balance supporting his wife and family with carrying out his official duties, as he has done since the beginning of the year.”
