Kenny Ortega, known for his work as a director and choreographer on the “High School Musical” and “Descendants” franchises, turns his attention to an iconic theater character: The Phantom of the Opera.

According to Deadline, Ortega will direct and executive produce the film, a young adult reimagining of Gaston Leroux’s classic fairy tale for Disney+. The studio is looking at the project’s franchise potential and hopes for another hit on the level of “Descandants.” The script was written on a whim by Giovanni M. Porta, and reports say it is not an adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running musical. Likewise, it has not yet been confirmed whether the project will feature original songs or whether Ortega will also serve as a choreographer for the film. Read more at Deadline.

In addition to his work for the Disney properties mentioned above, Ortega has also worked on Dirty Dancing, Hocus Pocus, Newsies, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Most recently, he worked for Netflix on the Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms.

The Phantom of the Opera, which follows the antics of the musical and the mysterious masked figure at the Paris Opera, has spawned numerous adaptations for stage and screen, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which closed on Broadway in April 2023 after 35 years at the Majestic Theatre. Directed by Hal Prince, the productions won 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actor for Michael Crawford, and broke several records over the course of its long run. It is considered one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time.

Other stage versions include Maury Yeston’s 1991 adaptation, simply titled Phantom. Although this musical has been performed regionally, it has not yet made it to the Broadway stage.
