Kearney High School Announces Updated Cell Phone Policy for 2024-2025 School Year | 1340 KGFW

Kearney High School, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY – Kearney High School is committed to providing an optimal learning environment for all students.

To achieve this goal, we are implementing an updated cell phone/earbud/smartwatch policy for the 2024-2025 school year. This policy is designed to minimize distractions and ensure students remain focused on their academic responsibilities.

Permitted times for using mobile phones and earphones:

• Lunch

• Breaks

• School activities

• Before and after school.

Prohibited times for using mobile phones and earphones:

• Cell phones and earphones are prohibited during class time.

• When entering a classroom, students must place their phones in the designated bin.

• The devices must remain in the caddy until the dismissal bell rings.

• Mobile phones are not allowed in the corridors during class time

Smartwatches:

• Smartwatches are allowed in class, but may not be used for communication purposes.

• Teachers can ask students to put away smartwatches during tests.

• Smartwatches will be confiscated if used for communication.

Consequences of non-compliance:

• In case of a policy violation, students must return their devices to the Administration/Attendance Office.

• Repeated violations will result in further disciplinary action.

Toilets and changing rooms:

• The use of mobile phones in restrooms and locker rooms is strictly prohibited at all times. This policy is consistent with the policies outlined in the KPS Manual.

School nurse:

• Students are not permitted to bring their cell phones when visiting the school nurse. The school nurse will use the school phone to contact parents and guardians if necessary.

Emergency contact for students:

• In case of emergency, parents and guardians may contact students by calling the KHS Attendance Office at 308-865-8065. The student will then be withdrawn from class.

We believe these changes will improve the learning environment and help students stay focused during class. We appreciate the cooperation and support of our students, parents, and staff in adhering to this updated policy.
