Kearney High School announces cell phone policy

KEARNEY – Kearney High School has implemented an updated cell phone/earbud/smartwatch policy for the 2024-2025 school year.

The policy is intended to minimize distractions and ensure students focus on their academic duties, Kearney Public Schools said in a press release.

Permitted times for using mobile phones and earphones are:

• Before and after school.

Prohibited times for using mobile phones and earphones:

• Cell phones and earphones are prohibited during class time.

• When entering a classroom, students must place their phones in the designated bin.

• The devices must remain in the caddy until the dismissal bell rings.

• Mobile phones are not allowed in the corridors during class time

• Smartwatches are allowed in class, but may not be used for communication purposes.

• Teachers can ask students to put away smartwatches during tests.

Consequences of non-compliance:

• In case of a policy violation, students must return their devices to the Administration/Attendance Office.

• Repeated violations will result in further disciplinary action.

Toilets and changing rooms:

• The use of mobile phones in restrooms and locker rooms is strictly prohibited at all times. This policy is consistent with the policies outlined in the KPS Manual.

• Students are not permitted to bring their cell phones when visiting the school nurse. The school nurse will use the school phone to contact parents and guardians if necessary.

Emergency contact for students:

• In case of emergency, parents and guardians may contact students by calling the KHS Attendance Office at 308-865-8065. The student will then be withdrawn from class.
