Kathryn Hahn talks about Agnes of Westview

(This story contains no major spoilers for Agatha all the time.)

Kathryn Hahn’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in the form of a pushy neighbor of Wanda Maximoff and Vision in the 1950s. WandaVision. At the time, your humble self reminded me that her role as Agnes was reminiscent of Milly Campbell, her former neighbour from the 1950s in the Kate Winslet-Leonardo DiCaprio-led Revolution Streets (2008). Of course, it turned out that Agnes was a cover identity for a powerful witch named Agatha Harkness, and between the general popularity of WandaVision and the scheming character’s chart-topping single, “Agatha All Along,” justified Agatha an even deeper look in a spin-off series that also bears the title Agatha all the time.

Created by WandaVision Chief Jac Schaeffer, yesterday’s premiere of the two-part series begins with Agatha still stuck in the all-encompassing spell of the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), with which she punished Agatha WandaVisionConclusion. But instead of another homage to classic sitcoms like its predecessor, Agatha all the time finds Agnes, not Agatha, in a Mare by Easttown-inspired prestige crime drama called Agnes of WestviewHahn delivered her own interpretation of Winslet’s detective character Mare Sheehan, creating a more direct homage than WandaVision‘s unintended overlap with Revolution Streets. (The very first teaser trailer for Agatha all the time offered a healthy view of Agnes of Westview.)

“I had Mare by Easttown when it came out and I was obsessed with it,” says Hahn The Hollywood Reporter. “So (Agnes of Westview) was definitely a love letter to that kind of show.”

Below, during a recent conversation with THRHahn also talks about her unexpected path to becoming the title character in a Marvel Studios project.

When I spoke to you, WandaVision A few years ago I pointed out that you were back in Revolution Streets Mode as a neighbor of the 1950s, so I was not surprised that you were once again in Kate Winslet’s territory with Agnes of Westview. Since Agatha has obviously eaten too much Mare by EasttownDid you do that during preparation?

I had eaten Mare by Easttown when it came out, and I was obsessed with it. I loved it so much. I love – and so does (creator) Jac (Schaeffer) – a prestige crime drama led by a strong woman with a past. There are a lot of templates for this show. I also love Broadchurch. I love so many of them. So this was definitely a love letter to that genre of show.

Jack approved I realize she overlooked this possibility, but were there any conversations on set about Evan Peters, since his WandaVision Actor Ralph Bohner could have played a version of his own character Mare by Easttown Character? (Aubrey Plaza’s character ultimately represents Peters’ mare character as a visiting detective.)

Oh, funny! I don’t remember hearing any conversations about it, but there are definitely conversations about him. He’s so good.

You have turned a normal general meeting into an important role in a series of successes in WandaVision and now your own show in Agatha all the time. Were you able to put into context at this point what this all means for you and your career?

First of all, I never imagined this in my future because of the career that had preceded me up to this point. I just thought that this was an area that I didn’t think was open to me. I just thought that it was something that I wouldn’t find myself in. And then when I heard that she was a witch and that WandaVision was going to be new territory for the MCU and that it was going to be a departure and break so many conventions, I was so excited. I was just ecstatic. And Agatha is really always the main character in her eyes, so it felt very natural to naturally be the main character in this other show. It felt strangely natural, and it’s natural that she goes from being a lonely witch to a witch who needs a coven despite her feelings.

In the premiere, a shirtless Agatha runs outside to have a very funny conversation with her neighbor. Are you shocked you could do that in the MCU?

No, because that was my idea. (Laughs.) That was the first or second day of shooting, so we ripped the Band-Aid off. It was just very important to see her in that moment at her most powerless.

Did you have any character requests for Jac and her writers’ room?

Jac and I are pretty much on the same page when it comes to Agatha and her behavior. I often felt like I was Jac Schaeffer, and I was empathizing with her Agatha and her view of the world. So I felt very connected to her.

Were you happy that you were able to film on Blondie Street one last time before the Warner Bros. Ranch was demolished?

Agatha’s house is the In love with a witch House, and I was allowed to take pictures in front of it. I actually forgot that they tore it down, which is really sad.

Congratulations to Agatha all the timeand thank you for explaining to me what a “jade egg” is. I had no idea what Agatha was talking about until I came across Goop.com in my research.

(Laughs.) Oh, you’re welcome! There seems to be some controversy about how safe they are, but I can’t get into that.
