When Kate Middleton made a surprise virtual appearance next to an unshaven Prince William on Sunday, all eyes were on the princess’ ring finger. Amid all the greedy comments about William’s new beard, fans also quickly noticed that the Princess of Wales was not wearing her iconic wedding ring that once belonged to Princess Diana. Instead, Kate swapped out her huge sapphire and diamond jewelry for a more simple eternity ring that seems to have special meaning.

Her latest accessory, a thick gold ring that appeared to be encrusted with diamonds and sapphires, was the star of the show as the princess wore a vintage long-sleeved striped Ralph Lauren top in a video congratulating England’s athletes on their Olympic achievements. While Kate wasn’t wearing her eye-catching engagement ring – a stunning 12-carat oval sapphire engagement ring surrounded by 14 diamonds, reminiscent of the 19th century – the similar stones in her new ring seemed to make it a matching set.

Kate, who is accustomed to reusing old clothes, was spotted wearing the designer shirt at a SportAid charity event in London and while grocery shopping in 2013. With her signature glossy brunette waves in a sleek blow-dry, the royal was the epitome of casual glamour. She accessorised with a dainty silver necklace and accentuated her features with minimal make-up.

Fans were quick to speculate that the new piece of jewelry is an infinity ring, a sweet symbol of the couple’s continued commitment to one another while Kate undergoes cancer treatment. Although the princess has yet to be spotted in public wearing the new sparkler ring, it’s also possible that it was a gift from William when the couple celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary in April.

The palace has yet to announce when Kate will make her next official appearance, especially since the family is reportedly planning to spend the rest of the summer at Balmoral. However, fans will be keeping an eye out to see if she ditch her old sapphire and diamond ring for good, or potentially bring the two sparkling pieces together in a royal combo.
