Early control of the AFC West is on the line when the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers meet at SoFi Stadium. The Chiefs are the clear away favorites against the struggling Chargers.

Kansas City (3-0) is off to another undefeated start, but none of the wins have been easy. Patrick Mahomes has nearly as many touchdown passes (five) as interceptions (four) while dealing with the absence of injured running back Isiah Pacheco and the disappearance of tight end Travis Kelce. Mahomes is 8-2 in his career against the Chargers with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 25-6, but this isn’t a classic Chiefs offense coached by Andy Reid.

On the other hand, Los Angeles (2-1) has done a good job on defense under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, giving up just 11 points per game. However, this unit could be missing two anchors on Sunday. Pass rusher Joey Bosa is out after losing last week in Pittsburgh with a hip injury, and all-safety Derwin James Jr. is serving a one-game suspension for player safety violations.

On the other hand, there are larger health concerns. Quarterback Justin Herbert has re-aggravated his ankle injury, and even if he can heal it, he will likely be without starting tackles Rashawn Slater (pectoral muscle strain) and Joe Alt (MCL sprain). Los Angeles also has a bye in Week 5, which could impact who plays on Sunday and who doesn’t.

The Chiefs may not be at their best right now, but they are still the reigning two-time Super Bowl champions and have defeated the Chargers five straight times.
