Kamala Harris sends Joe Biden into the election campaign as he enters the home stretch

Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden will co-host a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state, on Monday, praising unions while boosting Biden’s reputation among workers.

The two will participate in the Labor Day parade in Pittsburgh and deliver speeches. It will be the first time they have spoken together on the campaign trail since the surprise election upheaval that sparked new enthusiasm in the 2024 presidential race about six weeks ago.

Harris and Biden will also attend an event at a local union hall, along with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Bob Casey, who is seeking re-election. Local and national leaders of major unions, including the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the AFL-CIO and the United Steelworkers, will be in attendance.

Although they recently appeared together at a White House event to discuss Medicare drug savings and also attended the first day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Monday will be their first joint campaign appearance – an endeavor some political analysts called a “risky move” as Harris tries to keep her distance from her unpopular boss.

Harris doesn’t seem worried about that and is looking to reinforce Biden’s pro-union legacy on Labor Day in Pittsburgh. Biden has declared himself the most pro-union president in history and was the first sitting president to actively picket. Monday’s visit is especially significant for the president because of his long ties to Pittsburgh, where he has attended events for over 15 years and launched his 2020 campaign at a Teamsters union hall.

Harris, meanwhile, will make her first appearance as the Democratic candidate in Steel City as part of her Labor Day campaign’s major campaign.

As September enters the home stretch of the campaign, Pennsylvania has emerged as a crucial battleground for both parties. Recent polls show a neck-and-neck race between former President Donald Trump and Harris, with Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes up for grabs.

Harris has been actively campaigning in Pennsylvania in recent weeks, while Trump visited the Keystone State on Friday. His visit, which was supposed to focus on energy and fracking, ended with a lengthy defense of his campaign’s policies that led to an altercation between a Trump 2024 aide and an Arlington cemetery official.
