Kamala Harris jokes that an intruder in her home will be “shot”

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris said Thursday that any intruder who breaks into her home “will be shot,” a comment apparently made in jest during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

While moderating a high-profile livestream town hall meeting with the Democratic candidate, Winfrey Harris said in an interview that she was surprised to hear that she owned a gun during the presidential debate with Donald Trump last week.

“If someone breaks into my house, they’ll get shot,” Harris replied, then burst into laughter. “I probably shouldn’t have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”

As Vice President, Harris resides in the heavily guarded Naval Observatory building in Washington.

The exchange took place during a discussion on gun control. Harris supports stricter background checks for gun purchases and the reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons.

“That’s my point, Oprah. I’m not trying to take away everyone’s guns. I believe in the Second Amendment,” Harris said. “It’s just common sense,” she said of the gun control measures she supports.

Harris reported that last year she held town hall meetings at colleges where she asked students to raise their hands if they would have to participate in a school shooting drill at some point between kindergarten and 12th grade.

“Almost every hand went up. It was scary,” Harris said.
