Vice President Kamala Harris has released her latest campaign ad, which features abortion rights activist Hadley Duvall from Kentucky, who was sexually abused for years by her stepfather during her childhood.
A central theme of Harris’ presidential campaign so far has been reversing the consequences of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The ad, titled “Monster,” shows 22-year-old Duvall starting her day by completing monotonous tasks: pouring coffee, washing her face, loading the dishwasher.
In the voice-over, she says that she has never slept through the night in her life.
Her stepfather began abusing her when she was five and later impregnated her when she was 12. She has previously described in detail how she was manipulated into believing the abuse was normal – any attempts to break away from her later in her childhood were met with violence.
“I remember thinking, ‘I have to get out of my skin. I can’t be myself right now. Like, ‘This can’t be it,'” Duvall says as images of her as a child flash on the screen.
“I didn’t know what to do. I was a child. I had no idea what it meant to be pregnant. But I had options.”
Kentucky is one of several states that have passed abortion restrictions in the past two years that make no exceptions for rape or incest.
Previously, the USA had the second most restrictive deadline after Texas at 15 weeks.
Under state law, Duvall would have been required to carry the pregnancy to term.
Her story caught voters’ attention in another viral commercial late last year during the gubernatorial election in her home state.
Many Democrats attribute their inclusion to the successful re-election of Governor Andy Beshear.
The campaigner’s voice-over also refers to Donald Trump’s contribution to restricting reproductive rights.
His decision to pack the Supreme Court with anti-abortionists allowed the conservative majority to give individual states the power to regulate or ban abortion altogether.
“Because Donald Trump overturned Roe v. Wade, girls and women across the country have lost the right to choose, even in cases of rape or incest,” she says in the ad. “Donald Trump did that. He took away our freedom.”
During the presidential debate last week, Trump repeatedly claimed credit for appointing the three Supreme Court justices.
He always stressed that the issue must be decided by each individual state and said that he would not support a nationwide ban on abortion.
Duvall’s stepfather, who pleaded guilty to rape, sodomy and sexual abuse, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.
She first shared her experiences in a Facebook post on June 25, 2022 – the day Roe v. Wade was overturned.
In addition to her involvement in Governor Beshear’s campaign, the Christian, who grew up in Owensboro, also appeared in media interviews with Vice President Harris, culminating in her appearance on stage at the Democratic National Convention last month.
Her plan is to continue touring the country with Harris until the election.
The commercial’s soundtrack is by Billie Eilish, who yesterday announced her support for the Harris-Wade campaign together with her brother and producer Finneas.
“We are voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because they are fighting to protect our reproductive freedom, our planet and our democracy,” Eilish says in a video posted on her social platforms.
“Vote as if your life depended on it, because it does.”
