Kait’s Angels Community Yard Sale helps two neighbors in need

NORTH FORK, NY — If there’s one thing North Fork residents love, it’s a good garage sale. And what could be better than a garage sale for a good cause?

Kait’s Angels will once again be holding its annual Community Yard Sale at the home of Darla and Joe Doorhy on Saturday, September 7th from 8am to 1pm. All you can carry will be available for $20 from noon to 1pm.

Donations can only be dropped off at the Doorhy House, 1125 Old Jule Lane in Mattituck, on Friday, September 6th from 4-6 p.m. Large furniture, televisions, computers, beds or car seats (due to recalls) will not be accepted.

This year’s recipients include Stephanie Galka of Riverhead and Lauren Uribe of Southold, both battling cancer, according to Darla Doorhy.

Joe and Darla Doorhy lost their daughter Kaitlyn on August 22, 2014. She was struck by a car while she was in college. Grief filled the community as everyone struggled to comprehend the loss of a young woman, a former Strawberry Queen of the Mattituck Lions Club, known for her bright smile, philanthropic spirit and compassionate heart.

But tragedy turned to hope when Kait’s Angels was founded in Kaitlyn’s memory with the goal of doing good deeds in her memory. And now the annual flea market is organized to help others in their darkest hours.

Kait’s Angels also recently hosted its annual Designer Handbag Wingo event, with proceeds benefiting community members in need.

“That’s what Kaitlyn always said. Her motto was, ‘Helping hands, helping others,'” Darla said. “One hand for yourself and one hand for others – to help the community.”
